We picked up our Shi Tzu cross puppy on Friday 16th September 2005, after work.
We got lost a few times locating where her family lives, but we finally arrived there!
We met her human family and her canine family. All the dogs and puppies were happy healthy little fur balls.
The puppy I chose is the runt of the litter and at her current age of 6 weeks old weighs in at a tiny 0.93kg!
|
|
I have named the puppy Lilith-Morgana, and to make it nice and easy to call her, we have nick named her ‘Lily’.
Lily’s first night in her new home started with her having a couple of dog biscuits
& then falling asleep in her basket.
She sounded sad a few hours later, so we took her into our bed with the two cats and us! |

| |
Lily is very tiny and still needs a lot of sleep, but it is not to early to start to train her in the rules of the house.
This morning I put her in a walking harness, attached a light ribbon leash and took her into the back garden for ten minutes of walking loosely on a leash and getting her used to coming to her name.
After her first morning of school work she came inside for a well earned nap! |
|
|
|
Her second training time was spent re-enforcing the stuff she learned yesterday (to come when she is called, and to walk on a leash). As part of playing with her outside I also began to teach her to sit on command. This was done as part of a game, and she began to catch on quite quickly. |
Lily found an old sandal outside and although it is bigger than her, she managed to drag it around for a bit until she tired!
She was very muddy from playing outside with me and Adelaide, so I had to bath her. She was mortified that she was being made wet and soapy and whined for an hour afterwards! |
| |
|
Lily was shivering after her bath, and despite being dried thoroughly and encouraged to play in the sunlight, she was still cold. So I made some felt with some Merino wool tops I have, and then cut out the dog coat from it. Here she is snug and warm in her new jacket! |

Lily goes to work
19.09.05 |
I’m on leave for a few days while Lily is settling into her new home.
To get her used to different environments and new people in a safe manner, I carried her the 3km into work so that she could meet some new friends and reunite with people she has already met.
She was exhausted when she came home, and Adelaide the cat licked her all over and was very happy to see her safe return! |
 |
Adelaide the cat enjoys playing with Lily. She found a tennis ball in the back yard and pushed it towards Lily to encourage her to play. |

Separation anxiety - Tuesday 20.09.05
|
We go to work five days a week, so I have to get Lily used to being alone for some hours in the day, without her yelping and whining and becoming distressed. (Yelping and whining is also rather distressing for the neighbours!)
I decided that part of today’s training would be alone time for Lily.
The first time I shut her in the spare room with her bed, toys, litter tray, food and water, she yelped and whined and screamed (I am sure people thought she was being tortured!).
|
| She finally wore herself out after a full two hours of excruciating yaps! After she was quiet for about five minutes I came into the room and greeted her enthusiastically telling her what a good dog she is for being nice and quiet.
After playing with her for half an hour I decided it was time to reinforce that being quiet and not yappy will get rewards, this time however I put a CD on in the spare room (mostly to mask the sounds of the high pitched whines!). I chose a CD at random and shoved it into the computer to play. It happened to be Bob Dylan’s “Desire” album. |
I left the room flinching at the whines and yelps I knew would come… but nothing… not one single yap of protest occurred.
I peaked into the window and saw Lily happily playing with her toys.
I came back into the room to tell her how clever she is for being quiet. Turned the CD off and prepared to repeat the ‘isolating of Lily for her own good’ trick.
as soon as the door shut she was yelping again….
Weird I thought… as she was so quiet before when the Dylan CD was on
It turns out she is a fan of Bob Dylan. When she is in the room alone with a Dylan album playing she is happy. I tried other music after that, but it was only Dylan she liked!!! |

Not Another bath!
30.09.05 |
|
|
|
Lily is now 8 weeks old, we have had her in our home for two weeks. Two weeks and three baths later, she still hates bath time!
After she screamed the neighbourhood into submission with her wails of protest, her bath was finished, and she emerged soaked but clean! |

It may be Spring but I’m still cold!
3rd October 2005 |
| Here’s Lily in one of her many jumpers. She feels the cold fast, and starts shivering and whining whenever the temperature drops a little! Because of that I have made and bought a variety of jumpers and jackets for her. It seems odd putting a jumper on a dog that already has her own permanent fur coat!!! |

Lily’s First holiday - 7th Oct 05 |
Lily went with us for a weekend away. She met my family and their pets. After scaring the miniature poodle, Chico, she finally made him realise she is fairly harmless and they played in the garden together.
She also met the cat, Kipper, who she dragged mercilessly by his tail. Kipper was too sleepy and unmotivated to do anything about it. |

Home again
10th Oct 05

Lily has been on a weekend holiday with us. She met the family and their pets. She had a great time.
She is back at home now, and after enthusiastically greeting the cats she has gone for a well-earned rest! |

30.10.05
|
|
Lily recently had her second injection at the vet’s. She is now 1.5Kg!!!!
She has learned how to SIT on command, and is starting to learn FETCH and how to SHAKE PAWS. She gets a bit confused with the paw shaking and lifts both front paws in the air while puttingeher head to one side in concentration! |

Third injection
18.11.05
|
| Lily went for her third injection yesterday. She is now 2.35kg! Gaining confidence she is managing to walk on her leash for a km now before tiring of the walk and starting to cringe from the noise of the cars! She still cries and whines when we put her in her room at bedtime. She still bites when she plays with us, but she is getting better behaved! |

Registration
20.11.05

OOOPS, Phoned the local council on Friday to find out when Lily is supposed to be registered. ARGHHH they told me at 12 weeks all dogs are to be registered. WHOOPS #@!*^%$#@!
Anyway they are sending me out the forms and I shall have her a registered and legal member of the community in no time! |

Still hates baths!
June 2006 |
| Lily is almost a year old, but she still isn’t fond of baths! Although she has been groomed since she was a baby she hates the hairbrush/comb and runs away and hides under the bed whenever she sees them! |
